Six Dimensions of Wellness: Physical Wellness
Over the past several months, we have been exploring the Six Dimensions of Wellness, a model of total wellness that we embrace at Westminster at Lake Ridge. The Six Dimensions of Wellness is a concept first developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute. In Dr. Hettler’s view, that total wellness is more than just physical health; it also includes components including social, intellectual, vocational, spiritual and emotional wellness.
Like interlocked building blocks, each of the six components or dimensions of wellness contributes to the strength of the whole organism. Together, they form a model of wellness that is holistic, positive and affirming, encompassing your lifestyle, physical, mental and spiritual well-being, and interactions with others and your environment.
Applying the six-dimensional model raises your awareness of how each dimension contributes to healthy living and how they are interconnected. This awareness addresses your whole being, affirms and mobilizes your positive qualities and strengths, and helps you achieve your full potential.
All of those qualities are important to us at Westminster at Lake Ridge, where everything we do is designed to promote an enriched and engaged lifestyle for our members.
During our investigation into what constitutes total wellness, we have seen how this unique retirement community provides a multitude of opportunities for social interaction; promotes intellectual growth through cultural experiences, classes and lectures; encourages the pursuit of old and new activities and passions that provide vocational fulfillment; fosters spiritual inquiry; and creates a positive environment that emphasizes respect for and dignity of each individual. Now we have reached the final dimension: physical wellness.
According to the model created by Dr. Hettler, traveling the path of physical wellness means taking personal responsibility for your health, being attuned to your own body, self-care when you have minor illnesses and knowing when medical attention is required.
The physical dimension encourages you to understand and practice the habits and lifestyle that lead to good health: regular physical activity; diet and nutrition; safety precautions such as wearing a seatbelt; and abstaining from practices that impede health, such as use of tobacco or excessive consumption of alcohol.
Westminster at Lake Ridge members enjoy choices when it comes to healthy eating and exercise. Healthy food selections prepared with fresh, flavorful ingredients are always available in the elegantly appointed main dining room or the Clipper Café, where neighbors gather to share meals and enjoy each other’s company. In addition, physical fitness opportunities are second to none. You can take a swim or water aerobics class in the indoor heated pool, work up a sweat on your own in the Fitness Center, or participate in a variety of classes that include Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, yoga, stretching, strengthening, personal training and full-body workouts led by fitness professionals.
Westminster at Lake Ridge recognizes that physical wellness needs vary throughout our lifetimes.
